A few months ago, the Great Start in Life conference brought together more than 250 teachers and early childhood education and care (ECEC) practitioners, researchers and policy makers. It emphasised the importance of early years learning and on the benefits quality early education services can bring in school outcomes and in later life, as well as to society as a whole.

'School leadership' does not only refer to head teachers.

When we speak about social and civic competences, we refer to democratic values, attitudes and practices which make up the culture of democracy. Many people regard these competences as an essential element of the school curriculum.

Multilingual classrooms have become a reality in Europe, especially in big cities. The term refers to classrooms in schools where many or even most of the pupils speak another language at home than the language of instruction. It also includes children who grow up speaking dialects or regional languages at home and are confronted with the national standard language for the first time at school.
